    RESEARCH

Carried out research on the nutrition and genetics of marine mollusks since 1975. Pioneered the development of microencapsulated diets to improve delivery of nutrients to bivalve mollusks and well as marine shrimp and fish larvae. In 1996, initiated the Molluscan Broodstock Program (MBP) at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, OSU, to improve yields of Pacific oysters. The program has resulted in a 30% increase in yields after 6 generations of selection, mainly by improving survival. In addition, setting success of larvae derived from MBP broodstock has been improved by about 50%, compared with that of larvae from wild broodstock. Apart from shellfish, I have also pioneered the co-culture of abalone and the red seaweed Palmaria mollis (dulse) and, more recently, have promoted the consumption of dulse as a healthy human food.
